Quick answer

A heart centre brings cardiac diagnostics and treatment together in one place, usually with its own cardiac catheterisation laboratory. In Switzerland the term is not legally protected — what counts, therefore, are the services actually provided, the number of procedures performed each year and quality certification. Centres differ above all in whether they work on an outpatient or inpatient basis.

01 — Definition

What is a heart centre?

A heart centre is a facility that brings the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease together under one roof — instead of sending patients back and forth between their GP practice, radiology and hospital. Its hallmarks are its own cardiac catheterisation laboratory, a full range of non-invasive diagnostics and a permanent cardiology team.

Worth knowing: in Switzerland the designation is not legally protected. On its own, it says nothing about size, equipment or experience. What is more telling is which services are actually provided on site.

What does it usually include?

  • Non-invasive diagnostics — ECG, exercise ECG, Holter ECG, echocardiography, stress echo
  • Cardiac catheterisation laboratory — for coronary angiography and interventional procedures
  • Interventional cardiology — balloon angioplasty and stent implantation
  • Rhythmology — assessment + treatment of heart rhythm disorders
  • Prevention and rehabilitation — risk factor management, follow-up care

Large university centres additionally provide cardiac surgery, intensive care and transplant medicine. Specialised outpatient centres cover the plannable part of this spectrum.

02 — How to choose

What to look for when choosing a heart centre

There is no single “best” heart centre — only the one that suits your condition and your situation. The following six questions will help you assess your options. They are deliberately not ranked: depending on your findings, their relative importance can differ completely.

01

Its own catheterisation lab?

Without its own lab, invasive investigations have to be referred elsewhere — this takes time and means a change of treatment team.

02

How many procedures a year?

Routine correlates with safety. Ask specifically about the annual number of procedures — reputable centres will tell you without hesitation.

03

Which certifications?

Quality labels and recognition by professional societies are verifiable signals — unlike self-descriptions on a website.

04

How long until an appointment?

With stable symptoms, a wait is reasonable; with worsening angina, it is not. Ask about the realistic waiting time, not the best-case scenario.

05

Outpatient or inpatient?

Planned procedures can be done on an outpatient basis in stable patients. Emergencies, complex interventions and cardiac surgery require a hospital with an intensive care unit.

06

One dedicated contact?

Will you see the same doctor throughout your treatment — or someone different at every appointment? For follow-up care, this makes a considerable difference.

The Swiss landscape at a glance: university hospitals and large hospital groups cover the full spectrum up to cardiac surgery and transplant medicine, and are the right place for emergencies and complex procedures. Specialised outpatient centres such as Cardiance Group cover the plannable diagnostic and interventional part — with shorter distances and no hospital stay. The two models complement each other; neither replaces the other.

03 — Comparing the models

Outpatient or inpatient heart centre?

This is the most important structural difference between heart centres. It determines whether you are home by the evening or spend the night in hospital.

Before a planned procedure — stent implantation, bypass surgery or a valve procedure — a second assessment is not only legitimate but sensible. It takes a few days and can put your decision on a firmer footing.

10 — FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Answers curated by our FMH-certified cardiologists. Can’t find your question? Simply give us a call.

A heart centre brings the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease together in one place. Typical features are its own cardiac catheterisation laboratory, imaging such as echocardiography and stress testing, and a permanent team of cardiologists. The term is not legally protected in Switzerland, so what matters is which services a centre actually provides.

Six criteria can help you assess a centre: Does it have its own cardiac catheterisation laboratory? How many procedures are performed there each year? What quality certifications does it hold? How long is the wait for an appointment? Are procedures carried out as outpatient or inpatient treatment? And is there one dedicated contact person throughout your entire treatment? How much weight each criterion deserves depends on your condition and your personal circumstances.

At an outpatient heart centre, patients arrive in the morning, are examined or treated, and go home again the same day. An inpatient centre additionally has beds for overnight stays, an intensive care unit and, as a rule, a cardiac surgery department. Planned procedures such as a diagnostic cardiac catheterisation can be carried out on an outpatient basis in stable patients; emergencies and complex procedures belong in an inpatient setting.

Cardiance Group runs two cardiology clinics, each with its own cardiac catheterisation laboratory: Ergolz Klinik in Liestal BL and Cardiance Clinic in Pfäffikon SZ. The focus is on outpatient diagnostics and interventional cardiology. Cardiac surgery and an intensive care unit are not part of our facilities — for procedures that require them, we work with partner hospitals.

First appointments are usually available within 48 hours on working days. Our patient administration team will get back to you within one working day of your enquiry. If you have acute symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath, always call 144 immediately.

If your treatment is billed through basic health insurance, a referral from your GP or a community-based cardiologist is common depending on your insurance model, but not always mandatory. Self-paying and privately insured patients can register directly. We will clarify your situation in an initial consultation.

Yes. Both locations are easy to reach — Liestal is around 20 minutes from Basel and EuroAirport, Pfäffikon SZ around 30 minutes from Zurich. For self-paying patients, we provide a cost estimate in advance. Please let us know about any language requirements when you register.

Yes, a cardiology second opinion is expressly welcome — especially before planned procedures such as stent implantation or bypass surgery. Please bring any existing findings: cardiac catheterisation images, echocardiography report, stress test and medication list. The more complete your records, the more reliable the assessment.

Where there is a medical indication, cardiac assessments and procedures are mandatory benefits of compulsory basic health insurance under the Swiss Health Insurance Act (KVG). You pay your deductible (franchise) and co-payment. Additional services and treatments without a medical indication are at your own expense — we will inform you of this in advance.

Cardiance Group was the first in Switzerland to implement this model consistently: invasive cardiology, including cardiac catheterisation, in an outpatient setting, with discharge on the same day instead of a hospital stay of several days. More than 95 per cent of diagnostic procedures are carried out this way.
